“Just think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!” George Carlin

Just some general musing or more appropriately, rants…

I want start with a big shout out to the NY Assembly for passing the marriage equality bill. Now go out and get that last vote from the Senate. I know Cuomo can do this.  Also big high-five to  NY Republican Senator Roy McDonald, “”You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing. ”
I so need to move to New England.

And, Anthony Weiner, I really didn’t think you could disappoint me even more but alas, you have. I can’t understand why you would allow them to bully you into resigning when Vitter with his prostitutes is still in congress. You should run again and use Newt’s defense…I was just too committed to the service of my country but god has forgiven me.

Now onto my home state of Floriduh.

First off we have this “lovely ” story about a woman & her 2 young sons, ages 8 & 5, that were witnessed beating the living fuck out of two 8 week old kittens. The story was brought to my attention by a great friend that is also one of  the most dedicated animal rescuers I have ever met.

In Brookville, FL Nuce Boo, né Wilana Joenel Frazier, and her 2 sons beat two 8 week old kittens by using a metal bat, kicking, throwing them against trees & finally slicing one of the kitten’s neck open.  One died, the other is being cared for by an animal rescue group but it will probably have severe brain damage.  So according Nuce, this is an appropriate behavior for small boys, it’s OK to beat something smaller than you. Really,? WTF? In cases like this I firmly think that people should be made to go through parenting classes & then upon completion, file for a parenting licence BEFORE they have kids. Does Nuce not realize that these boys one day will be men and they will think it’s perfectly fine to beat the living crap out of their girlfriends, wives, baby mommas, women because as boys they were taught to beat the life out of an 8 week old kitten. Does Nuce not realize that most sociopath or is it psychopaths, I get them confused, will have to ask Dr. Peggy, start off torturing animals. Now I don’t know if sociopath or psychopaths are made or born but this may be a great way to find out. Maybe we should follow the 2 boys & see if nurture plays a role in creating such monsters.I sincerely hope she looses her children. I cannot think of a worse parent for these boys.

As this horrific beating is, and it is an all too common occurence,  the FL legislator is too busy passing bestiality laws, because that is really common. Maybe they should have focused their attention on producing stricter animal cruelty laws. Pass stiffer penalties for animal cruelty might have been, time better spent. But since FL animal cruelty laws are so laxed, Nuce was charge with cruelty to animal, “a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both.” FL statute 775.082: “ For a misdemeanor of the first degree, by a definite term of imprisonment not exceeding 1 year; ”

From Salon.com we get the story of the baggers in Tampa, FL starting a summer camp for 8-12 year olds, called “Tampa Liberty School”. I just don’t know what to say about this other than, WTF! But I think Alex Pareene said it best in the article, so you might as well go ahead read it. He did say it much better than me. I agree with him, before you go accusing us terrible, awful liberals of indoctrinating children , take a long hard look in the mirror. Tampa Liberty School is nothing more than the indoctrination machine at it’s best.

Now onto Judge Doom, aka Rick Scott. Among his many ridiculous cuts, he cut a life saving test for infants that law makers had already set aside $ 2 million for. The test was for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease or SCID. SCID is also known as “The Bubble Boy Disease”. Those of us of a certain age all remember The Boy in the Plastic Bubble movie, well this is the same one.  “…the screening not only saves lives but, in the long run, it would also save the state money. He [Dr. John Sleasman, a USF professor and an immunologist at All Children’s Hospita] says if SCID is caught early, a bone marrow transplant can cure a baby. The survival rate is very high. But after three months of age, the risks and costs skyrocket. If an infant is on Medicaid, the state can pay a million dollars for treatment and still not save the infant’s life”. So thanks Judge Doom for this because we know you only care about that your corporate cronies, mom & baby be damned.

Judge Doom also cut funding for Healthy Start which provides at risk first time mothers with at home nursing care. This one not only affects the mothers but me personally, as a home care nurse.  But then again we can fend for ourselves unless we have an Inc. by our names. And, finally Judge Doom cut family planning services, right in step with the republican/bagger mantra of stopping “abortions”. I guess he just doesn’t see the irony here, if you can’t PLAN your pregnancies, then you might be in need of abortion services. Or, that Planned Parenthood office you just closed might have saved a life with a pap smear or mammogram.

But by far, my favorite law passed by Judge Doom is the law preventing doctors but more importantly pediatricians about asking if there are guns in the house because it might offend someone. The law is a result of this: “The scuffle over “docs vs. Glocks” seems to have started when a pediatrician in Ocala asked the mother of a young child whether she kept guns in the home. She refused to answer because, as she put it, “whether I have a gun has nothing to do with the health of my child.” Actually it does, you stupid bitch. “Consider: According to a suit filed this week by the Brady Center, 65 children and teenagers are shot every day in America, and eight of them die…” My job as a nurse and a doctor’s  job is to educate patients & their families. I have to seek information regarding hazards in the home or environment and then teach my patients & their caregivers.  For example, pools and we have a lot in FL, we teach on pool safety, i.e. gates or pool alarms, the importance of swim lessons, importance of never leaving young children unattended around a pool, CPR. Why do we this, because 1 it’s our job & 2 we have all seen or heard terrible stories of  “near” drownings in children. With the elderly we point out fall hazards, motorcycle riders the importance of helmets unless you want to become an organ donor, children & bikes & skateboards, helmets help prevent traumatic brain injuries, toddlers and household chemicals, the importance of cabinet locks.  And the list goes on and on. So why is this law bullshit, because it prevents nurses and doctors from pointing out hazards and teaching prevention methods that might save a child’s life. Should we be allowed to ask if there is a gun in the home, hell yes. How else will these ignorant fucks learn about safety locks and gun safes.

Judge Doom

Thanks Melissa for the idea a quick google search & I found this.

more facebook stupidity

The funny thing is Donna doesn’t even live in FL, I believe she’s in NH. Post like hers just make me so incredibly angry  , it’s not just the ignorance behind it but the mean spiritedness, selfishness and racism. It’s almost as if they don’t even try to educate themselves. Does she even know that unemployment in FL in 12%, that the welfare rolls have increased by 15% since the recession started, that FL is leading the nation in foreclosures.  This is why we have social safety nets,  when people are struggling economically, at least they have something, not much but something to house, feed & clothes their families. This ridiculous & unconstitutional law will only make more difficult for those who are in the greatest need.  And really, who wants to be on welfare these days with all the vilifying of the poor.

This also come from someone who calls themselves a “christian”. This is daily post….

I guess she’s forgotten Christ’s teachings such as “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me.” Matthew 25:40 or this one: “When Jesus heard these things, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have, and distribute it to the Poor. You will have treasure in heaven. Come, follow me.” Luke 18:22 I’m going to have to go with Gandhi on this one, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

It’s so sad to see  people like Donna that think so little of the disadvantage and buying into the Faux news propaganda that all on public assistance are lazy & taking advantage of the system.  But unfortunately, as long as the Faux news propaganda machine is out there, will have to continue fighting such ignorance.

“I wish, my dear Kepler, that we could have a good laugh together at the extraordinary stupidity of the mob” Galileo Galilei

Yesterday, I found myself asking “why do you do this? You will never change their hearts & minds.” I asked this of myself in regards to a Facebook (FB) post regarding our “esteemed” governor Rick Scott & his “genius”plan to require drug testing for ALL welfare recipients. Testing that is expensive, testing that the applicants will have to pay for out of pocket and hope to be reimbursed within a reasonable time. A laughable idea, when have you known the government to be timely on anything?!? (http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/06/01/florida.welfare.drug.testing/)
To me the only reason for this inane law is for his holiness, “the people of FL work for me”, asshole in chief to further enrich himself at the tax payers expense. You see Scott owns or should I say, until late last year, owned Solantic urgent care centers. In November he transferred ownership to his wife, you know to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.   Remember this is the same man whose previous company, Columbia/HCA  Hospitals, committed the biggest Medicare fraud in history. (http://www.wusf.usf.edu/news/2010/06/18/whistleblowers_say_rick_scott_knew_about_medicare_fraud)
As usual I digress…As I voiced my dismay over this travesty of a law, I was again amazed by level of ignorance & bigotry out there. What really angered me was this 1980’s Regan myth, throw back attitude of the Cadillac driving welfare queens, the beginning of the attack on the poor. I had naively thought that in the last 30 years we had overcome this sickening & hateful attitude. Not only was this attitude that all welfare recipeints are lazy drug addicts that are milking the system is alive and well but so was the fact that I was just another “bleeding heart liberal” trying to give away our country.

You have to understand I live in South FL, the bastion of Cuban Republicans. How I, myself of Cuban decent, came out an extremely liberal democrat is beyond me. Personally I blame my older brother, but that’s a story for another day. To say it simply, I have to deal with people who believe that Faux News is the gospel of land and it’s beyond maddening. So whenever I see this blatant or willful ignorance from “friends” in the land of FB, it is exasperating. I seem to believe that I can change their thinking by simply presenting a rational, well thought out and, when needed, cited argument. And, every time I am wrong & I cannot believe what I read or the personal attacks. The republican & bagger mentality seem not to know any rational or reasonable thought. They buy into whatever Faux News feeds them. The poor, the unions, the elitist, the liberals are ruining this country and are therefore evil. For example here’s part of the thread:

How to you combat that kind of thinking…”…but for far too long there have been those that milk the system. If you are going to ask for a handout, you should not be strung out while doing so. ” When did we get here?!? Do these people really believe that all welfare recipients are milking the system while strung out on drugs? I have to faith that they are just blindly following the herd.

Here’s another gem:

First off it’s NOT across the board, really Jeff, go read something & educate yourself. And where oh where is the cite for the “Testing for cause is the flawed logic that has been challenged and lost. ” ? But, my favorite is the last sentence “Perhaps if people don’t want to submit to testing they can get off welfare and pull up their boots.” Again there is that attitude of welfare recipients as lazy, living off the government.  I tried to point that we really don’t why they are on welfare, the welfare roles have sky rocketed since the start of the recession and have increased in FL by 15%. (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-01-25-welfare-rolls_N.htm). Maybe, just maybe, these people are struggling with unemployment which 12% in FL and/or a foreclosure. And, while some do take advantage, not all take advantage of the system. Additionally, being part of a society, means taking care of those less fortunate than yourself.

here’s my reply:

But as I said earlier, Jeff & Kelli’s “logic” is an attack on the poor. An attack that was started by Regan 30 years ago and is being giddily carried on  by the conservatives in our midst but most importantly by the baggers. And this “logic” is something I firmly believe we must all stand up to, make our voices heard, that it is faulty logic.

Of course all this was met with the usual contempt. You’re just a “bleeding heart liberal”

.

I suppose Jeff that when you cannot win the argument with facts and reason, you must resort to name calling and stereo-typing. It is this thinking that is exasperating, this belief that in order to save our country we must do away with “socialist” programs. We must re-claim our country from the big, bad “socialist” President Obama. This is the war we are fighting, brought to you by the misinformation of Faux News & their ilk. A war on the poor, women, children, elderly, immigrants, the middle class, the public sector employee, african americans, everyone but the top 2%of earners and large corporations. We must speak out every chance we get, we must yell from the roof tops, we must not allow the class & social warfare to continue, even in the land of  FB. I guess I just answered my own question “why do you do this? ” Because I can.  Because  I must. Because we must all save this country from the ignorance that comes with complacency.
